Final order deadline: ~~March 1~~ extended through April 12, 2024!
Scionwood shipping: around March 11, 2024.
Regular orders placed after March 4 will ship around late April through early-to-mid May, in the order in which they were received. Sorry, we cannot expedite these orders, add to existing orders or combine orders. Regular orders placed on or before March 4 will ship around March 26 through late April, starting with warmer areas and finishing in colder areas. Surplus Sale orders ship in the order in which we receive them after we have completed all regular order shipments. We will begin shipping Surplus Sale orders in early May and we will notify you of your estimated ship date as we approach that time. Sorry, we cannot expedite Surplus Sale orders or combine them with existing orders. Scionwood and early rootstock orders ship around March 11.

Martha Crab Apple Scionwood

This is a twig for grafting. Late Summer-Early Fall. Excelsior, Minn., about 1879, raised by Peter Gideon, best known for his famous apple Wealthy.

Classic heirloom crab with high-quality beautiful bright rosy-red 2" fruit for fresh eating and cooking. Yellowish flesh is coarse, crisp, juicy and quite delicious.

Jason Davis of Cayford Orchards in Skowhegan, Maine, introduced us to their old Martha trees many years ago. The crab has been part of his family’s orchard for generations. “They have this amazing sweet and tart flavor, they’re super crunchy, and they’re the perfect snack size,” said Heather Davis. Also suitable for jellies, jams and other cooking.

Medium-sized tree is annually bearing, extremely long-lived and hardy. Blooms midseason. Z3.

Scionwood

Scions are twigs, not trees. They have no roots and will not grow if you plant them.

The deadline for ordering scionwood is February 16, 2024, for shipment around March 11. (Please note: we ship scionwood only in mid-March. If you would like to order rootstock to arrive in the same shipment, select mid-March shipping when adding the rootstock to your cart.)

We sell scionwood in two ways:

By the stick: One 8" stick will graft 3 or 4 trees.
By the foot: For orchardists grafting large numbers of trees of a particular variety, we also offer scionwood by the foot (minimum order of 10 feet per variety). In our own nursery work, we are usually able to graft 6-8 trees from one foot of scionwood.

You can graft right away or store scionwood for later use. It will keep quite well for several weeks stored in sealed ziplock bags in the refrigerator.
