Open pollinated.
Perennial to Zone 3. Forms unique fragrant flat-topped clusters of upturned rosy red flowers on 3–5' tall plants. Willow-like leaves are 4–5" long. Clump-forming; great for naturalizing. Attracts bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The monarch butterflies need all the help we can give them—plant more milkweed!
Grows naturally in floodplains and wet meadows but seems to do well in drier spaces. Self-sows, but doesn’t take over like common milkweed. Native throughout North America.
If sowing in spring, cold and moist stratify the seed for one month. Can also be sown outdoors in fall for spring emergence. Space plants 18–36" apart in moist soil.
