Also known as Scout apricot. Extremely hardy drought-resistant tree native to northeast China, far east Russia, and Korea.
Highly ornamental pink blooms in early spring and bright orange fall foliage. Makes a great rootstock for grafting and is useful in breeding new frost-resistant varieties—Morden 604 is one of its offspring. Small yellow fruit is of variable eating quality and does not compete with fruit from grafted cultivars.
First described in 1883 by Russian botanist Karl Maximovich, who believed it to be a variety of Prunus armeniaca. There is some debate over whether P. mandshurica is its own species. Z3.
