Hydrangea quercifolia

4-6' x 6-8'

Spreading multi-stemmed hydrangea with large deeply lobed oak-like leaves and protrusions of spiked white flowers that bloom in late spring. Flower panicles up to 8–12" long turn pink to bronze in late August and remain intact through early autumn; great in arrangements both fresh and dry. This cultivar was selected for strong flower stems that won’t flop over in the rain. Deep green foliage becomes a spectacle of purple, red and orange in fall. Mature bark exfoliates in time. Adds texture to gardens and hedges. Blooms on old wood, so if pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering. Rarely fed on by Japanese beetles. Will sucker. Plant in moist fertile well-drained soil, in sun to part shade. While most hydrangeas are complex hybrids, this is a selection of the species; introduced by Princeton Nursery in 1979. Species is native to southeastern U.S. Z5.
