June’s Pear European Pear

Pyrus communis Early Fall. Unknown parentage. Pownal, ME.

We got our first crop of these this fall and were blown away. The skin is thick and leathery, but the flesh is amazing: rich, sweet and melting—everything you could want in a pear. Fruit is large and very clean with no cracking, very pest resistant. Great for fresh eating or cooking. Grower Seth Yentes entered the fruit into the 2023 Common Ground Country Fair exhibition and won a judge’s award. The tree is vigorous and healthy with better branch angles than most pears. Introduced to us by June Lacombe and Bill Ginn of Hawk Ridge Farm in Pownal, ME, whose beautiful locally famous tree dominates their backyard.

Initially listed in our catalog as Beurre d’Amalis, but recent DNA test results have shown this to be incorrect. In the past we’ve also offered this pear under the provisional name Pownal. Our description remains the same and fully matches the fruit of the tree that we are now offering as June’s Pear. No matter the name, this is a pear worth growing. Z4/5. Maine Grown. (2½-6' bare-root trees)

European Pears

Although some pears appear to be self-pollinating, we recommend a second variety for pollination. Bloom dates for all varieties are similar. Plant 15–20' apart. For 2024, European Pears and Perry Pears are on OHxF97 or a similar rootstock.
