Basket Willow

Salix 20' tall. Species unknown. Original cuttings came from the Seed Swap and Scion Exchange at MOFGA many years ago.

The bark is green to light brown. Catkins are small and not very ornamental though the cut stems look quite elegant in a vase at peak catkin stage. The term “basket willow” is a common name for many kinds of willow that produce tall, straight, flexible, minimally branching shoots suitable for craft. Even though this one is a bit of a mystery, we couldn’t resist propagating it. A useful addition to any homestead. Pollard or coppice annually to collect material to dabble with. You can even expand your willow patch by collecting and planting your own dormant cuttings. Z4, at least. Maine Grown. (1-2' plugs)
