White Fringetree
White Fringetree Chionanthus virginicus 6-30' x 30' Large multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with an open spreading rounded form. So completely covered with lightly fragrant clouds of white drooping tassels in spring you can hardly see the glossy rich dark green oval 3–8" leaves.

Truly unique and exquisite as a small specimen tree that only grows lovelier with age. Will begin blooming 3 or 4 years after planting.

Small bluish-black fruit sought by birds. Bark is used medicinally for wounds and ulcers, and leaves contain polyphenols in similar quantity to olive leaves.

There are some amazing old trees at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery and at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The one in Brooklyn has a nearly 30' spread! May not reach this size in northern climates.

Adaptable, but prefers moist fertile acid soil. Tolerates air pollution; does well in cities. Native of eastern U.S. Z4. Maine Grown. (1-3' bare-root plants)
