Lee #8 Saskatoon

Amelanchier spp. 6x6' Thiessen x Northline. A. alnifolia. Lee Lloyd selection, Barrhead, Alberta. Also called Juneberry, Parsonberry, Serviceberry, Shadblow, Shadbush and Shad.

Clusters of purplish-black medium to large berries are mildly sweet and quite tasty. Great for pies, cobblers, jellies, jams, smoothies and cakes. Berries are about the size of a lowbush blueberry, or a bit larger, and seedier. Large yields on a somewhat upright shrub with loose arching branches. Crossed between two popular cultivars, used for fruit and market production in Canada.

New leaves are very light green and contrast beautifully against the older dark green lower leaves. Beautiful fragrant 5-petaled white flowers are early harbingers of spring in Maine. Nice red-orange fall foliage. Z3. Maine Grown. (1–3' shrubs)

Additional Information

Saskatoons (Amelanchier spp.)

Considered to be self-fruitful but we recommend planting with other Amelanchiers to ensure pollination.

We’re excited to be expanding our selection of saskatoon cultivars this year. We’ve always admired our native Amelanchiers in the wilds of Maine where they grow along stream edges and rocky slopes. Recently we’re learning more about saskatoons farmed commercially for fruit in Canada, much like how we grow highbush blueberries. In Canada there are saskatoon festivals, and even a baseball team called the Saskatoon Berries! For a taller tree species of Amelanchier, see Allegheny Serviceberry
