Beautiful medium-sized round conic yellow fruits covered with bright red stripes and dots, have a pinkish hue and resemble Chenango Strawberry. Ripen in midsummer, around the same time as Red Astrachan. A perfect sauce apple—incredibly soft when ripe, nice and tart but noticeably sweeter than most summer apples. We originally thought this tree was a Duchess but DNA testing revealed the parents to be Late Strawberry, a high-quality fresh-eating heirloom apple from New York c. 1840, and Yellow Transparent, the classic pale-skinned tart and ephemeral summer apple imported from Russia, valued for its extreme cold hardiness. This unique apple needed a moniker so we held a naming contest at Maine Apple Camp in August of 2022. We think the winning entry ‘Pink Duke’ is perfect with a nod to its previous mistaken identity. Blooms mid-season. Z4. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3-6' bare-root trees)
