‘Madonna’ Crabapple

‘Madonna’ Crabapple

Malus 18-20' x 15-20' M. Mazam. Lake County Nursery, OH, 1987.

One of the best rose types around and a favorite on our tour of Mike Smith’s collection. We thought Polar Bear and Blanche Ames were our favorite double whites, but this one rivals either. Glad to offer it again after a very long absence from our catalog.

Masses of large double rose-like white blooms appear early, open slowly and remain longer than most other varieties. Makes a good pollinator for many apples given this long bloom time.

Father Fiala found this seedling and described it as having the fragrance of “jasmine or gardenia.” Yellowish-red fruits persist till spring. Upright scab-resistant tree. Disease-tolerant foliage. What more could you want in a crab?

Z4. Maine Grown. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
