Red Delicious Apple

Malus spp. Fall. Peru, IA, 1870s. Originally found as an errant seedling in the orchard of Quaker farmer Jesse Hiatt—he named it Hawkeye after his home state’s nickname. Stark Bro’s Nursery held a contest to find a new commercial apple to replace Ben Davis and purchased the rights to the variety from Hiatt. Renamed Red Delicious, it went on to become one of the most commercially successful apples in the world.

The dark crimson red medium-sized tall conic fruit with a knobby basin has earned a bad rap as the thick-skinned, mealy and tasteless apple of cafeteria lunches. But when homegrown and eaten fresh, the fruit can be wonderfully sweet, aromatic and crunchy. At a recent apple tasting we tried some from North Branch Farm and they were... Delicious!

Blooms midseason. Z4. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3–6' bare-root trees)
