Late Summer. First recorded in 1898 in Charles City, IA. Long thought to be a seedling of Golden Russet, but recent DNA profiling reveals it to be a close relative to Duchess.
Although Iowa’s most famous apple is certainly Hawkeye, now known worldwide as Red Delicious, we think this native Iowa apple takes the cake for fresh eating and cooking. Large round, often angular and truncated, golden-yellow fruit with stripes and splashes of dark red. Deep stem cavity. Rich firm yellowish flesh is very juicy, sweet and tangy. When fully ripe in the summer, the core often turns pink and fills with a sweet-tart sugar.
Blooms midseason. Z4. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3-6' bare-root trees)
