Etter’s Gold Apple

Fall. Wagener x Transcendent Crab. Albert Etter intro, Humboldt County, CA, 1944.

Large round slightly ribbed fruit ripens to golden yellow. Crisp pale yellow flesh is sweet and juicy with a delightful aroma. Excellent fresh eating and can stay firm in storage for months. Originally named Allgold, this was the first apple selection of the unconventional self-taught plant breeder Albert Etter, who became best known in the apple world for his work with red-fleshed varieties. His breeding focused on apples suited to the northern California climate, but many of them—including this one and Wickson, a Fedco fave—perform well here in the Northeast. Blooms midseason. Z4. Maine Grown. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
