Canada Reinette Apple

Winter. Possibly from Normandy, France, before 1771. High-quality all-purpose russet winter storage apple with a deceptive name, an uncertain history, and more synonyms than we can name.

Roundish-conic, medium to very large, yellow to olive green with a reddish blush and mostly covered with russet. Firm, moderately tender, coarse, juicy, subacid and very good.

Despite its name, it’s thought to have originated in France. It arrived in Maine well before the Civil War and by 1850 was grown throughout much of the state. Still very popular in Europe a hundred years later. We even found the beautiful fruit at a convenience store in Villaviciosa, Spain, under the name Reineta Canada.

Recommended for those with root cellars. Mid-late bloom. Zone 4 or maybe 3. Maine Grown. (Standard: 3-6' bare-root trees)
