Blanche Ames Crabapple

25x25' M. spectabilis AA-6639 (‘Riversii’ x open-pollinated) Karl Sax intro, Arnold Arboretum, 1947.

One of the loveliest double whites. Wide-spreading mounded semi-weeping form, open and picturesque. A beautifully shaped tree with an interesting curvy branch structure you can see right through. Magnificent in bloom. Pale apricot-pink buds open to small white slightly cupped long-stemmed starlike flowers. The red flower stems add a reddish cast to the tree in bloom. The whole tree appears draped with foliage and flowers like a million stars in a deep green sky. Small ¼" yellow-gold fruit.

Blanche Ames (1878-1969) was an artist, writer and activist. She illustrated a seven-volume treatise on orchids and produced political cartoons promoting women’s suffrage. She was an outspoken advocate for women’s rights, including the right to birth control. Z3/4. Maine Grown. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
