Milo Gibson Apple ScionwoodThis is a twig for grafting. Fall. Highly flavored dessert variety. Not for those who like mild-flavored fruit. Delicious licorice taste with hints of banana. As intensely flavorful in most years as Frostbite, King David and Sweet Sixteen. Flesh is dense and firm. Keeps till the New Year. Large roundish form, muted yellow, mostly blushed red and overlaid with stripes of darker red. The history of this apple is somehow connected with the much-revered Milo Gibson (1905-1974), one of the founders of North American Fruit Explorers (NAFEX) in the late 1960s. Was it one of his creations or a tribute by an admirer? We may never know. But it’s a great apple. Blooms late. Malus. Unknown origin, possibly Oregon, early 20th century. Z4-8.
