Bitter Pew Cider Apple

Fall. Cider apple. Palermo, Maine, probably about 1900.

Bittersharp cider apple, suited to adding large amounts of tannin to jazz up your cider. While not as extreme as they can get, Bitter Pew is far more bitter than all traditional English bitter sweets and sharps. SG 1.048.

Medium-sized roundish angular green fruit with a large rusty red blush and many prominent whitish dots. Mellows in color as the season progresses but not in flavor. Has quite a long usable season. May be best in November, even as long as Nov. 15 though we used it in cider as early as late September as well as all through October.

Discovered as the rootstock from an old heirloom orchard tree that died down past the graft line. Probably Zones 4-6. (Semi-dwarf: 2½-5' bare-root trees)
