Yellow Sweet Clover
Yellow Sweet Clover OG Melilotus officinalis Thick succulent plants make an excellent green manure. Long thick taproots are very effective at breaking up subsoils and improving soil aeration. They bring up phosphorus and potassium in the process. Bees love sweet clover. Seed at 10–20#/acre, 1#/1000 sq ft. Certified organic.

As cover crop: Plant in spring with a nurse crop of oats for weed suppression. Biennial: most growth will occur the second year. Chop the 6–7' stalks at the end of the second year and turn under.

Raw seed; use with Alfalfa/Clover inoculant.

Additional Information

Clover

Clover is versatile, performs well in Maine’s cool humid climate and acidic soils, fixes atmospheric nitrogen, and attracts pollinators—what more could you ask for? The taller red clovers are better hay plants, as they have a more erect habit and greater biomass, and they dry more easily. No matter what kind of clover you choose, be sure to plant plenty to increase your chances of finding those lucky four-lobed specimens: botanists estimate that 1 in 10,000 clover leaves exhibit this trait! Clover may be planted from late winter through early fall. Seedlings are slow to establish and will benefit from a nurse crop of oats. Trifolium spp. (except Yellow Sweet Clover, which is Melilotus officinalis)

Farm Seed

Unless otherwise noted, our legume seed is sold “raw”: it has not been inoculated with the appropriate bacteria in a process called rhizocoating.

Organic Seed

We are a MOFGA-certified organic repacker and handler of seed and feed.
All our seed is untreated.

Organically grown seed is labeled OG.
The label ECO after the variety name describes non-certified seed grown without pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers on farms which maintain an active soil-building program. Some farmers eschew certification for a variety of reasons, ideological, economic and otherwise.
