Giant Grape Hyacinth Muscari

Bellevalia paradoxa Dense spikes of bright navy blue buds, similar to grape hyacinths but nearly twice the size. Flowers open deep purple, sporting a narrow yellowish rim as the flower matures. Strap-shaped grey-green 8–18" leaves. Attractive to bees but not to deer. Great little fragrant cutflowers. Differs from regular grape hyacinth in that the little flowers are slightly bell-shaped, not rounded.
Needs well-drained soil, sun to light shade. Allow the leaves to die back naturally to feed the bulb. Original range is the Caucasus from eastern Turkey to Iran. Z5-8, MS-LS, 8–12". 5cm/up. BACK!

Additional Information

Miscellaneous Bulbs

is the name the Royal General Bulbgrowers Association in Holland (Koninklijke Algemeene Vereeniging voor Bloembollencultuur, or KAVB) gives to this large group of flowers. The expensive catalogs call them specialty or accent bulbs; some call them minor or dwarf bulbs (even though some of the fritillaries are huge!); Louise Beebe Wilder covered most of them in her 1936 classic Adventures with Hardy Bulbs. Whatever you call them, most are uncommonly sweet, delicate, colorful, and completely welcome in spring.
