Metechi Hardneck Marbled Purple Stripe Garlic - Sustainably Grown

Allium sativum Highly productive in both northerly and more southerly climates, producing large cloves and storing well for over 8 months. Attractive purple-striped or -mottled bulbs and tan to brown clove skins, like others in the Marbled Purple Stripe group, Giant Turkish Red and Bogatyr (offered last in 2019). Ted Meredith, author of The Complete Book of Garlic, writes that “the thick scapes [of Marbled Purple Stripes] curl dramatically before straightening and becoming erect, reaching up to 6' tall.” Take advantage of their length by cutting scapes while still curled and tender to chop up for stir-fry or casseroles or to add raw for a spicy zing in salads. 30–50 cloves per lb.

Additional Information

Marbled Purple Stripe Garlic, hardneck type

Mottled purple striping on the skins of both clove and bulb. The leaves tend to be broader and bulbs tend to have fewer cloves than Purple Stripe varieties, though the cloves are often larger and more squat in appearance. Very good storage, and excellent for roasting.

Scapes curl and coil dramatically. 30–50 cloves per pound.

Seed Garlic

The bulb size, the skin color, the flavor, and the size and number of cloves are partly determined by genetics, and partly by cultural practices, soil and weather.

Our standard for a seed garlic bulb is a minimum 2" diameter. Every lot of garlic we ship has tested negative for garlic bloat nematode and for white rot.
