Bogatyr Hardneck Marbled Purple Stripe Garlic ECO
Allium sativum subs. ophioscorodon Large to very large flattened or squat bulbs, with streaked skins and a single ring of 4–6 large cloves per bulb. They sometimes produce “throat-sets” (bulbils in the stem), a characteristic more often seen in softnecks. Originally hails from the Moscow area.
Bogatyrs are heroic warriors in Russian epic poetry, some based on historical figures and others on tricksters and shape-shifters.
Z3-8 Eco-grown in Maine.
Marbled Purple Stripe Garlic, hardneck type
Mottled purple striping on the skins of both clove and bulb. The leaves tend to be broader and bulbs tend to have fewer cloves than Purple Stripe varieties, though the cloves are often larger and more squat in appearance. Very good storage, and excellent for roasting.
Scapes curl and coil dramatically. 30–50 cloves per pound.
The bulb size, the skin color, the flavor, and the size and number of cloves are partly determined by genetics, and partly by cultural practices, soil and weather.
Our standard for a seed garlic bulb is a minimum 2" diameter. Every lot of garlic we ship has tested negative for garlic bloat nematode and for white rot.
