| Summer. Parentage
and origin unknown, possibly from Maine(Franklin County). The old
literature lists several varieties as Orange Sweet or Sweeting. Will
Bonsall introduced this one to me. The original tree still barely
stands on the old Ramsdell farm in Farmington, just south of the New
Vineyard Mountains. The fruit is medium-sized, round to conic, buttery
yellow, with patches of russet and an occasional blush. Very nice
for fresh eating: dry fine tender yellowish flesh has a nice crunch
to it. Rich sweet flavor and crisp texture are rare for a summer apple.
Hangs 1-2 weeks when ripe, also uncommon for an early variety. In
1999 the fruit was ripe by August 5 but it usually ripens about three
weeks later. Blooms midseason. |
