Garden Sweet

Late Summer. Probably originating in Maine, possibly around Bangor, about 1840 (Penobscot County). I first learned about this unbelievably picture-perfect conical rosy-red apple from orchardist Charles Catanzaro as we toured his Downeast orchard one dark rainy September night, dashing out with flashlights to snatch samples from the old trees. This one came to him from his neighbor, the late Reggie Woodman. The Woodman tree most likely came from Ephraim Goodale's nursery a few miles away in Orrington 150 years ago. Goodale was an early proponent of Garden Sweet and may have been involved in its origin. Grown widely in central and southern Maine long ago, and now all but gone. Once again, Fedco to the rescue! Charles' comment: "It's a sweet apple. No question about it." Medium-sized rounded tree.
