Tilia americana American Linden 60-80' Also known as Basswood. Tall stately tree with rounded crown and numerous low-hung spreading branches. Good for attracting bees no matter how remote the location. Sweetly fragrant yellow June flowers reputed to make the best honey, also a popular after-dinner tea and stomach remedy. I consider it the best soft carving wood. Inner bark, tough and fibrous, is used for ropes and nets. Young fruit and flowers can be ground into a paste as a chocolate substitute. Yellow fall color. Likes deep rich moist soils, but will grow in dry heavier soils. Full sun or partial shade. Sensitive to salt and pollution. Tolerates alkaline soil. Subject to Japanese beetles and other insect damage, though control measures are seldom needed. May live to 900 years. Native from New Brunswick to Virginia. Z3. (2-3' transplants) |
