Sell Seeds for a Green School Fundraiser!

Tired of candy sales and want a school fund-raiser with a wholesome green message? Start a school seed store. We offer three options:

  • Packet Seed Store: Purchase multiple packets and re-sell them at a profit. Get our volume discount plus 5%.
  • Bulk Seed Store: 29 participants in 2013 from 12 states. Get our volume discount plus 5%. You may order by mail, fax or online with either option. There is no special order deadline, but plan to order early so you will have the packets ready in February and March when your customers are thinking gardens. We can help you select varieties.
  • Convenience Pre-order: 81 participants in 2013 distributed more than 22,000 seed packets and raised more than $20,000 for their groups. We customize an order form with 25 popular easy-to-grow varieties for each participating group. We will offer two options this year: our regular selection or an all-organic listing. Choose one or both, download and circulate to take orders from your community. We split the take with your school group, PTA or non-profit. You must make a commitment to sell at least 100 packets.

• The deadline to contact with us with intent to participate is Feb. 21 and to submit your order is Mar. 14.

Note to past participants: if you are planning to do a convenience pre-order seed school, please read these directions. We have made several changes in 2014 including:
  • Requiring a commitment to sell at least 100 packets.
  • We are no longer allowing third-party beneficiaries. Your institution must be the beneficiary of sale proceeds.
  • If required by your institution, please get prior permission from your administrator before applying to us.
  • We have changed proceeds shares at different sales levels.
  • Perfectly executed large orders will receive an additional discount.

BULK SEED SCHOOL–no application needed 29 participants in 2013 from 12 states.
  • Purchase seeds of selected varieties in bulk (sizes C and up)
  • Students repack the seeds to sell at their own seed store
  • More work, but a lot more fun than the other choices
  • Students design own packets, develop own marketing strategy and learn practical math using scales and scoops.
  • Offers the most money-making potential
  • Involves the most financial risk.
  • Requires advance planning
  • Need scoops and digital scales or balance beams. Fedco does not carry these.
  • Can purchase blank self-seal seed packets on page 14 bottom right hand column of the seed catalog (catalog #s 111 and 112) or use packaging from your office supplier.
  • No order deadline but we recommend ordering before Mar. 21 for best selection. Use the order form in the center of the catalog.
  • All applicable volume discounts apply to seeds plus an additional 5% seed school discount
  • HINTS: Limit varieties to 12-18 the first year, then gradually expand. Try garden themes such as heirlooms, 3 sisters, all organic.
CONVENIENCE PRE-ORDER SEED SCHOOL–Requires an application to us. If your sale needs prior permission from your institution please get cleared to participate by your administrator before applying to us. Then find your application form below the directions and please return it to us. As soon as we receive it we will generate your custom order form. This will be a PDF file you can download from our website. 81 participants in 2013 ranging from a single scout den to an elementary-middle school. Groups collectively sold more than 22,000 packets and raised more than $20,000.

  • Least risk of all options. We ship only what you’ve already sold.
  • However we ask that you make a commitment to sell at least 100 packets. If this is not attainable, please enlarge your sale group or try one of our other sale options.
  • We provide order forms with 25 popular easy-to-grow varieties with variety descriptions, simple cultural instructions and drawings. See http://www.fedcoseeds.com/forms/schoolsample.pdf and http://www.fedcoseeds.com/forms/schoolorganic.pdf to download the 2014 sample forms.
  • Although we have a suggested retail price, you may set the price you charge (see details below). Regardless of your retail price, the cost to you is the same and is determined by how many packets you sell. Note that in general, in 2013 groups that used our suggested retail price had better sales than groups that chose their own prices.
  • You have a choice of two order forms, the regular selection and the all-organic selection. You may choose either or both. The regular selection is less expensive and outsold the organic selection last year. Groups choosing one or the other did better than groups offering both, though there were exceptions. You may not mix and match from the two lists, nor may you make your own custom selections or add-ons. The varieties on each form are the same for all participants. The combined total number of packets you sell from both forms determines how we split the proceeds.
  • Regular order form: Suggested retail is $1.60 per packet. We split the proceeds with your group according to the following:
    Orders of 39 packets or fewer: Your group pays us $1 per packet plus a $5 handling surcharge.
    40-99 packets: $1 per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    Note that groups ordering fewer than 100 packets combined will not be invited back to take part in future years' sales.
    100-199 packets: 90¢ per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    200-299 packets: 85¢ per packet to us, remainder goes to your group.
    300-499 packets: 80¢ per packet to us, (A 50-50 split if you use our suggested retail price).
    500-799 packets 75¢ per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    800 or more packets 70¢ per packet to us, remainder to your group.
  • All-organic order form: Suggested retail is $2.20 per packet. We split the proceeds with your group according to the following:
    Orders of 39 packets or fewer: Your group pays us $1.40 per packet plus a $5 handling surcharge, remainder to your group.
    40-99 packets: $1.40 per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    Note that groups ordering fewer than 100 packets combined will not be invited back to take part in future years' sales.
    100-199 packets: $1.25 per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    200-299 packets: $1.20 per packet to us, remainder to your group
    300-499 packets: $1.10 per packet to us, (A 50-50 split if you use our suggested retail price).
    500-799 packets $1 per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    800 or more packets 95¢ per packet to us, remainder to your group.
    Discount: New this year, groups who order 200 or more packets combined, whose applications are correct the first time without requiring changes, who sort their orders perfectly, and whose orders arrive on or before our Mar. 14 deadline date qualify for an additional volume discount that will be awarded at the discretion of our order coordinator in the form of a refund.
  • Even if you've participated before, you must apply using the form below to take part in 2014.
  • We provide an online downloadable order form in PDF format.
  • We customize each order form: you provide the name of your sale, the date the order form is due to your group, whom your customers make their checks payable to and what price you are charging. We provide you with your own online address to access your forms.
  • Young people take order forms, circulate them and take orders.
  • You total the number of packets ordered, send us 1 check for our share of the proceeds and send us all your individual orders.
  • We collate the orders, pull them individually in our warehouse, bag them and then group them by individual classroom and ship them 1-2 weeks after we receive them to one address.
  • You distribute the orders.
  • Deadlines: Feb. 21 to notify us of your intent to participate and provide us your custom information. All orders due to us by Mar. 14. Deadlines are firm!

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SALE
  • Do start planning early. Groups who start early consistently outperform those who don't.
  • Do use our suggested retail price unless you are confident you can raise more $ using a different price. Groups that used our prices last year outperformed those that set their own. Be aware that sales resistance sets in at higher prices.
  • Most groups choosing only one of the two forms have outperformed those who sold from both. Use your judgment, this has not been a hard and fast rule, but consider using only one form.
  • Do use the order forms you download from us, not your own forms. Orders on one side only, please.
  • Do allow several weeks for your student sellers. Those allowing 2-4 weeks for sales outperform those who try to do it all in one week.
  • Do sort all your individual orders first into piles of regular and organic sale and then by classroom before you send them.
  • Do send us all your individual orders.
  • Do send us the total # of packets ordered and one check.
  • Do send your entire order at once. Please don't mix and match. Please no add-ons.
  • Do contact us after distribution if we made any errors or if you were short packets for any reason.
  • Don’t spend hours trying to reconcile $ and packets ordered to the exact penny. Close is good enough.
  • Don’t figure out orders for each variety. All we need is one grand total for the entire order. We’re pros with 35 years experience and can collate the individual totals in less than one hour with 100% accuracy.
  • Don’t collate all the orders and just send us the totals. We’ll do that and save you lots of time!
  • Even if you participated last year, don't use last year's order form. Please get new forms from us this year.
